Effects
Here are the positive and negative effects that one-child policy has brought to China and the people.
Positive Effects:
1. Elitism
Parents invest more in their child due to market demand for educated labor and intensified competition in the labor market for better employment
Resources can be used on single child that he/ she can receive a better education/ equipped with other talents as parents don’t have to evenly spend the resources on two or more children
2. Population control
The policy helped a lot in controlling the population, as China is a big nation with huge population, she needs lots of money to take care of its citizen. Just as what the former premier of People Republic of China Wen Jiabao said, a little problem of one's own can lead to a huge problem as China has huge population; at the same time, it also required lots of money to solve the problem as even a large sum of money would became little after it is distributed to each of the person in China. Therefore, it is important to control the population in China in order to develop the country.
Negative Effects:
1. 421 family
Due to the implementation of One-child policy, the birth rate in China is decreased and lead to an new family structure – 421 family
421 Family = A family with 4 grandparents, parents (Father & Mother) and the single child in a family
Problems:
->The single child cannot afford to feed their parents and the 4 elderly by his/ her own income
->Increase the government burden as government has to use more resources on feeding the elderly (e.g. pension program/ housing)
2. Spoiled kid
E.G.「七星伴月」: The single child became the core of family
->Family members tends to satisfy the wants of the single child and put their focus on him/her as he/ she is the only child in the family
->Child became dependence and spoiled by the family
->Children are showered with many privileges like being spoon-fed, assisted in shower and changing clothes
3. Unevenly-distributed gender proportion
Number of males > Number of females
Ratio: 118.06
Social problems: Sex crime/
4. Elderly who lost their only child (失獨老人)
Under the implementation of One-child policy, most of the families have only one child in their households, once the child die of accident or any other reasons, their parents would lost the only support for their living expenses. Leaving the elderly with no care and money to make a living, they don't have another child to turn to, this would lead to increasing the financial burden of government and also create social problems related to the elderly.

5. Abortion (強制墮胎)
Gender-selected abortion/ Abandonment/ Infanticide
Due to the traditional concept that value boys more than girls, some parents wish to have boy but they cannot have more than one child under the implementation of One-child policy, therefore, some of them would abandon the female babies so that they could have chance to have a male baby, gender-selected abortion is also one of the problems created because of the policy.
Another kind of abortion is Forced abortion, the government officers would force the women who violated the policy to have an abortion if they are unable to pay for the penalties or to apply for having one more child. This kind of abortion is usually cruel and it kills both mother and baby in many cases.
